The VW dealership fixed our car by noon on Monday and we were on the road home by 1pm. The car ride home was brutal. Since it was so hot (temps above 100 in Denver even) the van's air conditioner was working overtime for the first 4 hours of the trip home. Then it died. Only hot air was coming through the vents from that point forward. We were just outside of Hays Kansas. We had over 700 miles to go.... neither of us said anything but we were silently and internally each freaking out. This was going to be a hot ride home. We barely slept that night so we could get going at 4 am while it was cool outside. It said cool until about 8 am and then the three of us just suffered in silence. My rule was "no complaining" and everyone followed it including Riley. He was a champ and we made sure he had a constant supply of cups of ice, which we got for him at each stop. Greg and I just suffered through and we made it home by 5 pm last night. Home sweet home.
Red Rocks was a blast. It really is the best concert venue I've ever been to and if you ever get the chance to see a show there or just see it anytime, you should definitely check it out. There's nothing like it out there. Plus I love the Avett Brothers and the concert was a blast. Check out the photos below.
Short reviews of the trip:
Eurovan Camper: All in all the camper was terrific. I never thought I would say that I love camping, but with the van I had a blast. I especially love sleeping in the pop top because I'm "outside" but still on my comfortable mattress.
Drive to and from CO: It's not so bad if you take your time and plan it out. On the way home we were in a bit of a frenzy plus we had the air conditioner malfunction which created some chaos making the trip home difficult.
Estes Park/Rocky Mountain National Park: Beautiful with good hiking. I was very fond of seeing the meadow full of elk- very cool to see in person. I'm just glad there were no camping run-ins with bears.
Trail Ridge Road: This road goes through RMNP and goes up to 12,000 feet with spectacular views. I loved and hated it all at the same time. I loved it because it was beautiful. I hated it because I was terrified of the heights combined with no shoulder and no guard rails. I will never forget this scenic drive for many reasons.
Grand Lake: I love water and I love beaches so when we found a little beach and some water in the middle of our Colorado adventure I was thrilled. I also got some amazing sunset photos here. Camping here was my favorite as we had a waterfront spot.
Steamboat Springs: A small town that then became a ski town. The downtown area is very cool and the skiing area has those great mountain bike/hiking trails. We stayed on the side of a mountain and could hike from our front door. Steamboat was both Greg and my favorite place. It was small, manageable, and full of fun things to do and see. We liked it so much we stayed an extra three days. I think we will both make an effort to go back- it is worth it!
Denver: It was really nice to spend some time with Jay and Sarah which we were able to do while we were in Denver. We had some great dinners, went to a really interesting and cool bar, and saw the Avetts. Unfortunately we were delayed because of a part needed for the car but made it home in record time! The last part of any trip is always hard and we were definitely home sick by this time.
All in all I will have memories from this trip that will last forever. I saw things I have never seen, done things I have never done, and been places I didn't even know existed while also getting to see family and friends. Colorado was quite an adventure!
| We moved right outside of Denver so we could see the skyline- the neighborhood was called "HIDO." |
